隧道的歷史：在十九世紀，倫敦擴大鐵路版圖，挖建地下鐵路。當時只有蒸汽火車，隧道是先挖開地面，鋪軌道、蓋隧道，再把隧道埋起來。因是蒸汽火車，隧道每隔一小段就有通風口排氣。
